Solvay launches Reactsurf (R) 0092 water-based reactive emulsifier for solid epoxy resin emulsion

Global environmental limits on emissions, VOC content and safety regulations are driving the development of water-based coating technologies

BRUSSELS, November 17, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Solvay has developed Reactsurf® 0092, a nonionic, non-ionic, alkylphenol ethoxylated reactive water-based emulsifier for solid epoxy resins primarily intended for use in industrial coatings and paints or binders.

After 500 hours of salt spray test (ASTM B-117) on a cold rolled steel plate, the epoxy emulsion paint with Reactsurf® 0092 from Solvay and a high volume pigment concentration (PVC) shows better resistance to corrosion as all marks. Photo: Solvay

Solvay’s unique and versatile Reactsurf® 0092 technology enables the formulation of high performance water-based epoxy coatings that can match or exceed those of solvent-based (SB) coatings but with a significantly lower level of compounds volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Solvay continuously develops and supplies products to meet the challenges of sustainable development and the regulatory requirements that its customers face today and tomorrow for cleaner and healthier paint and coatings formulations.

The new economical, environmentally friendly and process-friendly emulsifier offers easy handling by combining the characteristic external and internal emulsification phases without any additional chemical modification required.

“Solvay’s Reactsurf® 0092 emulsifier incorporates a highly reactive functional crosslinking group, perfect balance and synergy between emulsification and epoxidation to achieve a highly reactive emulsifier,” said Dr Rong Er Lin, director of research and innovation, Solvay Novecare Coatings Asia-Pacific. “This provides good particle size control for optimum emulsion coalescence and consistency without reduction in strength and provides excellent application performance and emulsion stability of paints and coatings. “

Water-based epoxy emulsions that incorporate Solvay’s Reactsurf® 0092 exhibit excellent freeze-thaw (F / T) resistance and are still fluid at -10 ° C (14 ° F) for up to 5 cycles F / T. Salt spray test results (ASTM B-117) on cold rolled steel plates (CRS) coated with epoxy emulsion paint with high and low pigment volume (PVC) concentrations show a combination of high resistance to corrosion, superior wet adhesion and peel off, unlike benchmark tests. Additional characteristics such as MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) rub test (ASTM D5264), impact resistance and pendular hardness are equivalent to conventional water-based epoxy coatings but with the significant advantage of very low VOCs.

High performance water based epoxy resin paints and coatings are used in a wide variety of end industrial applications such as freight and passenger railroad rolling stock, rail tracks and fittings, storage tanks , shipping containers, pipes and structural steelwork.
