Petition against Eskom tariff hike proposal collects 30,000 signatures in five days

The DA’s petition to oppose Eskom’s request to increase the electricity tariff by 20.5% has garnered more than 30,000 signatures in the space of five days.

The DA said it rejected Eskom’s attempts to raise the price of electricity at a time when the cost of living in South Africa is rising.

Kevin Mileham, DA MP and Shadow Minister for Minerals and Energy, said the cost of food, accommodation and transport continues to rise and a rise in electricity rates will not will only contribute to the financial distress of poor households in particular.

Mileham said the overwhelming reaction to the DA’s petition highlights just how ruthless Eskom’s bid really is. He said Eskom can barely keep the lights on, and expecting South Africans to pay more money for an unreliable service is completely irrelevant.

“We are heartened by the thousands of South Africans who have voiced their objections to this outrageous increase. And we urge more South Africans to add their signature by signing our petition…” Mileham said.
