Local nonprofit receives State Farm grant

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) – The state farm gives grants to 40 causes nationwide, and one of them is right here in central Illinois.

On Thursday morning, State Farm presented Paws Giving Independence with a check for $ 25,000.

The Peoria-based nonprofit trains mobility assistance dogs and medical intervention and gives them to patients in need.

Paws Giving Independence Director Donna Kosner said it was a shock to be chosen from the original group of more than 200 organizations.

“To be able to have that and know that for next year we’re going to be okay with our vet fees; we take in as many dogs as we can afford the vet fee, so that will allow us to bring more dogs and be able to train them safely and get the right care for each of them, ”Kosner said .

She said training dogs takes about two years, and most dogs go to someone in central Illinois.
